Windows Server 8 introduces the .VHDX format which both supports larger drives, and also fixes the issues with 4K sector sizes. I know of the workarounds but I still need my drive to work on XP. I am not desperate as I have other discs to backup to but I am curious why the backups fail on the new 3Tb external drives? Microsoft has more information here and here.
