Sometimes I get a dialog telling me that CTRL+ALT+DEL  didn't work. I shouldn't say crashed because that would give me some report and I got none. My other hard drive was giving me similar issues so I decided to contact Dell to have them replace it. Not only does this cause increased wear-and-tear on the drive itself, the computer's performance is significantly affected. Went back into safe mode and took it out.

I reported it to Google as well. Apparently this is not the correct driver for my system (a few years old Thinkpad T61), and windows update / update-driver doesn't find anything newer.  So, I went to intel's website, Thank you Frustrated Windoze User I must also agree this is a Windows 7 problem, and MSFT cannot own up to it because of all the Vista problems. If it helps, the window that pops up says "Firefox is not responding" and my choices are "Close this program" or "Check online" - neither really help. I deactivated all the Active X options and my IE8 is working perfect and will try the Firefox now.
